When I heard that Sharon Creech would be coming to our theater for the opening weekend of our World Premier of Walk Two Moons I was over the moon with excitement!!! Over the years Adventure Stage Chicago has been lucky to host some of the most beloved YA authors; Lois Lowry visited last year when we produced Gossamer and Louis Sachar made a stop at ASC during his tenth anniversary tour for Holes back in 2008. At both of those occasions Suzy at The Book Cellar has partnered with us to provide copies of the authors various books for sale after the show and we are so pleased that the partnership will take place again on November 5- so you can bring your own books or buy new ones (a great gift idea). That day is promising to be action packed and I’m so excited to offer the opportunity for families opportunity to bring their children to see this touching and powerful story, have a chance to Q & A with the author and then get a book or two signed. Unfortunately opportunities like this are few and far between, so I truly hope that our neighbors take advantage of this chance to meet such a talented and inspiring writer.
If you’ve read any of Sharon Creech’s work, you know that she writes a lot about the difficult “tween” years- growing out of childhood into adulthood, creating your own identity, coming to terms with difficult realities and dealing with loss- all very relevant for our middle school audience. I didn’t realize when I first read Walk Two Moons that there are actually two companion books; Absolutely Normal Chaos is a book about Sal’s new classmate in Euclid, Mary Lou Finney and her chaotic family and adventurous summer. Chasing Redbird is about the best friend that Sal left behind in Bybanks. I’d highly recommend these two books as supplemental reading for anyone who enjoyed Sal’s journey in Walk Two Moons. Another of my favorite Sharon Creech novels is The Wanderer, the story of 13-year-old Sophie’s voyage across the sea with her two annoying cousins and three eccentric uncles. I loved the poetic language of her dreams and the unraveling of her tragic history.
Feel free to comment on other favorite Sharon Creech novels, or what you love about the books I’ve already mentioned. We are just so honored to host such an imaginative and empathetic author at our theater and so proud to be producing the World Premier of Walk Two Moons.
